Premiering this spring at massive events including SXSW, Discover is the next generation of personalization for the event industry. This new dynamic welcome screen will help you shape attendee journeys and elevate their experience from the moment you announce your event dates to well after they have returned home. South By Southwest (SXSW) brings together the greatest minds in technology and culture for 10 days of leading content, music, and film. SXSW GO is the official mobile guide that helps festival-goers navigate the massive event, discover new content, and make the valuable connections that drive attendees to Austin year after year. In its fifth year working with Eventbase on the mobile guide, the focus for SXSW was on improving the event experience and eliminating the friction from common activities such as registration, session participation, and networking.

Following the inaugural use of iBeacons at an event in 2014, SXSW organizers wanted to push the envelope further with the deployment of more than 1,000 beacons to work with the event app at SXSW 2015 – again, a first for an event. The goal was to enhance the festival experience by making it seamless and efficient to network. The beacon devices worked by enhancing another in-app social networking feature named Around Me. As attendees walked into an official venue, the app would prompt users who were opted in to check in and see who was nearby, for a detailed view of other attendees and an easy way to reach out to those users.

With networking being such an important component of events, SXSW GO was designed to deliver a nirvana scenario where attendees could walk into a room and instantly know who everyone is and who they might want to walk to, the aim being to inspire new connections or experiences they wouldn’t have had otherwise.

As a festival that attracts tens of thousands of attendees to learn about the latest in technology and culture, SXSW has led the way in leveraging the latest technologies into the fabric of its event. This year’s iBeacon program was one example of incorporating technology to drive human interactions and deliver a differentiated overall event experience.
