Tens of thousands of film buffs descend on Lower Manhattan for the Tribeca Film Festival every spring. To help festival-goers navigate its vast schedule of films, venues and events, organizers provide audiences with a festival app as a comprehensive guide at their fingertips. The app’s scroll-able and easily-filtered calendar made building a personalized schedule seamless. In addition to helping attendees plan their festival experience, the app made it easy to share a personal screening agenda with friends and family and share film notes via in-app email.

The app’s introductory “Discover” screen was an interactive rich-media wall that showcased a rotating roster of films. With one tap, user could dive into the write up or use the QuickPlay feature to view tralers, allowing audiences to explore movies in depth and discover potential breakout hits, further enhancing the festival experience and helping film fans to plan their week.

With the goal of reshaping the film festival experience, festival organizers also decided to incorporate iBeacons with their mobile event app. iBeacon technology, low-energy transmitters that can detect and alert devices in its vicinity, allowed the festival to alert opted-in users and to offer up easy access to screening times and links to purchase tickets directly through the app. Thanks to a collaboration with Eventbrite, festival attendees were then able to purchase both film and event tickets directly from their devices, even up to 30 minutes before the start time. This hyper-local technology also made it seamless for movie-goers to to rate a film once the screening was over.
