Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games
The official app for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic was the first mobile experience for the Games, accommodating millions of active users, thousands of events, and hundreds of venues for the celebration of sporting excellence. Relied on by visitors travelling to Vancouver from across the globe, the app’s reliability and security was the Olympic committee’s top priority. In order to meet the demands of the massive event, Eventbase delivered a high-performing native app that could handle the scale and complexity of the Games, even without a data connection.
To reach global audiences, the app adjusted to the local timezone so users in Vancouver and around the world could keep track of their favourite sports and results in real-time. Rescheduled events due to weather conditions were easily shared through the digital schedule which was kept up to date throughout the Games. Users always had access to download the latest schedule. At its peak in the first days of the Games, the app was being downloaded every other second without fail.
Its dynamic maps, GPS, turn-by-turn directions and location-aware features such as “What’s On Now” helped visitors navigate more than 2,000 sport and cultural events at 150 venues in addition to transit systems during the Games. The app enabled filtering, keyword search, and category lists and personalized itineraries could be created by adding events as Favourites.
As the presenting sponsor for the Mobile Spectator Guide and the exclusive Telecommunications Partner of the Games, Bell Canada had their brand showcased alongside the Olympic rings of the initial splash screen and benefited from its association with the sporting event’s mobile innovation. Loads of extras such as access to online ticket purchases, embedded videos of the mascots, Olympic-focused Twitter streams, and special location-based video messages added a layer of creativity to result in an award-winning app.
